Abstract of Talk [XML Localization Issues with Particular Emphasis on Ethiopic Writing System]

The talk gives an overview of some of the widely used markup languages such as HTML, XML, VRML, and MathML. The particular problem of the current XML 1.0 specification's inability to let name tags and attributes in scripts such as Ethiopic is discussed in detail together with the proposed remedy based on a recent proposal co-authored by the speaker. A discussion on the immediate need of setting standards in Ethiopic XML in the areas of eCommerce and telemedicine along with some thoughts on Ethiopic XML authoring tools is given.

Abstract of Talk [Trends in Computational Mechanics and Finite Element Methods]

The talk gives an overview of some of the cutting-edge research and development being done in US, European and some Asian universities and Labs in the areas of computational mechanics and finite element methods. New algorithms and technology such as mesh-free FEA, adaptive meshing, FEA-supported probabilistic design, micro and nano mechanics, system-level modeling and virtual prototyping are covered.

The talk is supported by a discussion and demonstration of ANSYS, a popular and robust FEA software.

Abstract of Talk [Recent Advances in Computer-Assisted Structural Dynamics and Seismic Design]

A review of recent theoretical and software-based advances in structural dynamics and earthquake engineering with particular emphasis on seismic design is given. The talk also cover a review of progress and challenges in seismic design practice in North America that has relevance to the case in Ethiopia. The talk is supported by demonstration of state-of-the-art structural analysis software used in recent major building analysis and design around the world such as the New York Mercantile Exchange Building in Manhattan, the 42-storey Warsaw Daewoo center Tower, the Maju Perdana Towers in Malaysia, and the West India Quay Tower in the Canary Wharf area of London. A critical review of EBCS 8 –95, the country’s seismic design code is also covered in the talk.
