Homework 2 (Due on October 26, 1999)

For a centrally loaded simply supported deep-beam shown below, compute the flexural stresses Sigma-X at the x = 0 on top and bottom surfaces. Compare the results with the exact expression: Sigma-x = My/I.

     a)      use beam elements (use the minimum number of beam elements).

b)      Use plane-stress elements.

 Compare deflections obtained by both elements.

 

H = 4 ft

 

For bonus grade, you may consider an additional run with depth of beam of 12 ft.
